(De)Coloniality of (Ex)pression
(De)Coloniality of (Ex)pression | 2022 - 23
The works under the project "(De)Coloniality of (Ex)pression: A Matter of Creative (Ex)Pression" includes works 'BluePrint,' a Printed Coloniality, and 'I am Home,' an expression of Decolonized Embodiment.
Project BluePrint is the documentation of a design plan for a long-standing pattern of territory, control, and power. These works refer to Home and the body (self) literally and symbolically, a place of confinement and freedom. The series of monoprints maps the architectural places occupied.
BluePrint shows the architecture – an impression of our pressed expressions and being, specifically in the context of defining women's place in the systematic oppressive ideological system and as it further defines the culture, labor, intersubjective relations, and knowledge production. Living within this designed Blueprint, one must stay within the strictly defined parameters of colonial patriarchal administrations.
(De)construction of the work, "Blue Print."
The multimedia works are on paper with a combination of lithography and etching. The prints are on mulberry paper attached to a stronger substratum of archival Reeves BfK paper. The prints are attached with stitching, and the mulberry paper floats as skin delicately on the form paper surface. The stitching lines take the image of various structures of homes the artist has occupied. The printed image further reflects the movement the body occupies within the house. A ceramic loop is juxtaposed on top of the layered printed matter to emphasize the areas mainly inhabited or restricted to within the Home.
The work occupies space within the confines of the walls, defining where to be and at what time, doing what. These spaces, veiled and masked with notions of safety, protection, and warmth, impose limits on one's critical thinking and expression. These are Blueprints to control and confine some to provide comfort and support for the oppressor.
