divine and earthly
The project, divine and earthly was executed by engaging with the city of Kolkata in India during Kali Pujo. Witnessing the craft of making the Kali, appreciating the use of local materials, along with their skills, imagination, and resourcefulness inspired me. Additionally, social dogma’s (religious and political); gender inequality, poverty; materialistic overindulgence and irresponsible behavior towards nature were also expressed through the series of works developed. The notions related to ‘spiritual & material’ and ‘divine and earthly’ were explored in this body of work.
Materials utilized were specific to the site - such as bamboo, cloth scraps, threads along with Sondesh molds and clay. The works that developed under this immersive experience are –
1. Spirit of Smoke
2. Kali (Raktabija) in Us
3. Kali_Tongue: celebration | spiritual and temporal
