Athirst
Athirst | Works on Paper | 32 x 24 inches (each) | 2024
Athirst explores themes of connectivity, differentiation, and facilitation, emphasizing societal tendencies to constrain and diminish the rights, desires, and bodily autonomy of women, among many other disparities. Water and ecology act as a metaphor for a connector, highlighting the intricate intersections of our bodies, their environments, and their relationships to other forms of being.
Arid wetlands, often parched or unfulfilled, only spring to life with occasional rainfall, yet harbor the potential to nurture diverse ecosystems. These arid wetlands serve as the "cradle of life," akin to a woman's body. There exists a societal inclination to constrain and diminish the rights, desires, and bodily autonomy of women, mirroring the arid nature of these wetlands.
This artwork visually depicts interconnected systems' confinement, complexity, and diversity as they sustain various life forms. The mixed-media drawings titled "Athirst" capture the fluidity and adaptability of these systems alongside their disjointed and restrained eagerness. The work draws parallels between the dynamic nature and interconnectedness and subjugation of natural ecosystems and women's bodies.
