‘Collaboration Between Cultures’
Study of the sustainable aspects in traditional craft

This photo documentation is part of my travel research where I explored traditional crafts practices in Indian subcontinent. Wood block making, block printing, papermaking, large-scale fabric screen-printing with traditional patterns has been the part of this travel research documentation. These projects have provided me with the opportunity to learn traditional sustainable methods, but also better understand the commonalities and uniqueness between traditional and contemporary art.
The project is a reflection on traditional craft influences on contemporary art, and how modern advancement and technologies are affecting the traditional crafts. The research is a reflection on distinct classifications found in the artistic milieu, such as high versus low art, which metaphorically represent these strict binaries that are integral, yet limiting, in defining and expressing hybrid global cultural identities.

“Art is to me the glorification of the human spirit, and as such it is the cultural documentation of the time in which it is produced.” - Hans Hofmann
“Without craftsmanship, inspiration is a mere reed shaken in the wind.” - Johannes Brahms
